A visit to a famous local waterfall
are the waters of choice for the Discover Tuscany Team and their rafting active vacation itinerary, they are located about 100 km from Rome and approximately 200 km from Florence. These waterfalls situated in Umbria were artificially built by the Romans and are now the ideal stop on any active vacation itinerary. Labelled as one of the tallest in Europe and the tallest man-made waterfall in the world, it is comprised of three sections, the top one is the tallest, at 83 m (272 feet). For those of you not into all that water, can stroll down the paths and climb up the hill towards the top of the waterfalls, inside a finely preserved and equipped park
Our active vacation itinerary is loaded with curious history, the river was in ancient times, fed into bringing much illness (probably malaria). To remove that threat to the city of Rieti, in 271 BC, the Roman consul Manlius Curius Dentatus ordered the construction of a canal (the Curiano Trench) to divert the stagnant waters into the natural cliff. From there, the water fell into another nearby river below. However, that solution created a different problem: when the river was in flood stage, its water flowed threatening the nearby population. The issue was so contentious between the two cities that the Roman Senate was forced to address it in however they did nothing about the problem, and things remained the same for centuries leaving us with this beautiful wonder.
