The Gulf of Baratti and the area of Populonia
are today one of the most characteristic and enchanting landscapes of the Tuscan coast: rolling hills, Mediterranean underbrush on steep slopes that drop abruptly into the blue sea. You will traces of ancient populations, from the archeological area near the beach of Baratti: testifying to the impressiveness of the Etruscan industrial city of Populonia. It has been noted that during the Etruscan period Baratti was an essential and safe port of call for commercial shipping using the Tyrrhenian trading routes. Populonia was an ancient seaport of Etruria, originally connected to Volterra but later turning into a flourishing independent minearary and mariner center. The harbour, however, continued to be of some importance, and the place was still an episcopal see in the 6th century. The city was destroyed in 570 by the Lombards. The few survivors, led by bishop St. Cerbo, fled to Elba.
